Current positions in the electrical industry
Senior Sales Engineer – AMI / Smart Meters – OH, MI – 5627
Egret Consulting
I am representing a large and highly respected fully employee-owned Electrical Distributor that is seeking a Senior Sales Engineer to help expand its presence in the utility market across Ohio and Michigan (and possibly part of Indiana). This is a strategic territory development role focused primarily on AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure), Smart Metering technologies, and Utility Modernization initiatives.
While the title is Senior Sales Engineer, this position is much closer to a consultative account manager than a traditional technical support engineer. The person in this role will spend the majority of their time in the field building relationships, identifying opportunities, understanding utility capital plans, tracking upcoming RFP activity, and positioning solutions long before projects reach bid stage.
This is a sales / account management role supported by your technical knowledge.
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll be meeting with utility customers, discussng metering strategies, learning about upcoming system upgrades, presenting AMI solutions, and helping customers understand how technology can support their operational goals. You’ll spend time traveling throughout the territory, developing relationships with key stakeholders, attending industry events, and maintaining visibility within the utility community.
Week to week, you’ll be managing opportunities within Salesforce, coordinating with manufacturer partners, evaluating account activity, and working with internal leadership to prioritize target accounts. You’ll be expected to develop a strong understanding of who influences purchasing decisions, where projects stand in the planning cycle, and which opportunities deserve investment.
Month to month, you’ll be building territory strategy. You’ll assess market activity, identify emerging opportunities, strengthen relationships with utility leadership, and help shape long term growth plans. Success will come from understanding the market before everyone else does and helping position the organization where future projects will be awarded.
The primary focus of the role is supporting one of the industry’s most important AMI and smart metering manufacturers. Candidates must have direct experience working with AMI / smart meter technology products, utility metering systems, AMI networks, or smart grid technologies.
This role does not require deep product programming expertise. Dedicated technical resources handle those responsibilities. What is important is the ability to confidently discuss metering technologies, AMI networks, utility modernization initiatives, and industry trends with customers. The ideal candidate can communicate technical concepts clearly, deliver effective presentations, and build credibility with utility decision makers.
Internally, this individual will work closely with a small utility solutions team including sales leadership, manufacturer partners, and technical specialists. Collaboration is important, but this is not a role where someone sits in a branch office waiting for opportunities to appear. The expectation is to be in the market, building relationships, creating opportunities, and helping shape the future direction of the territory.
The territory includes Ohio, Michigan, and could include portions of Indiana. Travel is a significant component of the position and candidates should expect to spend considerable time meeting customers throughout the region.
The position reports directly to the Manager of Technical Solutions / AMI, a leader known for his collaborative and supportive management style. He believes in developing relationships, coaching people to success, and working alongside his team rather than managing from a distance. He is joined by a leadership group that is highly respected throughout the organization and deeply invested in helping employees grow their careers.
Success during the first year will not be measured solely by revenue. Building market intelligence, identifying key decision making influencers, understanding upcoming projects, developing account strategies, and establishing credibility throughout the territory are equally important. Revenue growth will follow, but understanding the market comes first.
Long term, the opportunity is substantial. The organization expects significant growth within its this business unit over the coming years. For ambitious professionals interested in leadership, strategic sales, or broader responsibilities within the company, there is a proven history of internal advancement and career development.
Just as important as the opportunity itself is the culture.
As a fully employee-owned company, every employee has a direct stake in the organization’s success. The ownership mentality is evident throughout the business. People genuinely support one another. Collaboration is real. Tenure is long. Employees stay because they are valued, developed, and rewarded for their contributions.
In addition to a competitive compensation package, employees participate in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan that has created meaningful long-term results for team members across the organization. The role also includes bonus opportunities, comprehensive benefits, business expenses, mileage reimbursement, and the support needed to be successful in the field.
If you have proven experience and successes with AMI and smart metering technologies, enjoy building customer relationships, and want the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a growing business, I welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
