General Manager – Transformer Manufacturer
Cleveland, Ohio Area | Onsite
I am partnering with a highly specialized manufacturer of custom transformers, reactors and engineered magnetic products to identify its next General Manager.
This is not a typical GM opportunity.
The company was recently acquired by private equity and is entering an important next chapter. The General Manager will replace one of the company’s cofounders and owners and assume responsibility for the day-to-day leadership of the organization. It is a significant transition and an opportunity for the right person to take what has already been built, protect what makes the business successful and lead it forward.
The company designs and manufactures custom dry type transformers, reactors, and specialty magnetic products for demanding electrical applications. Its products are used across markets including data centers, transit, alternative energy, power quality, grounding, and other specialized power applications.
Engineering and manufacturing are both done in house. The business has been built around engineering expertise, manufacturing capability and solving customer applications that often require something specifically designed for the job.
The GM will have responsibility for virtually every aspect of the organization outside of engineering. This includes manufacturing, production, purchasing, sales, customer relationships, people and overall business performance.
While engineering will continue to own product design, this is an engineering driven company. The General Manager needs a strong enough technical foundation to understand the products, communicate intelligently with engineering, talk directly with customers, and understand what is happening on the manufacturing floor. The person does not need to be a transformer design engineer. They do need to be technically credible.
Every morning starts with understanding what is happening in the business. What is shipping today? What needs to ship tomorrow? What is moving through production? Where are the bottlenecks? Do we have the materials required to build what has been promised? Is an order at risk? Does a customer need to know?
The General Manager needs to know the answers.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who wants to be close to the operation rather than manage it through layers of people and reports. The GM will maintain visibility into orders, backlog, production schedules, material availability, shipments, and customer commitments. They will review purchasing activity, make sure materials are being ordered appropriately and ensure production has what it needs to execute.
Customer relationships are equally important. The company has built its reputation by solving specialized applications and developing long standing relationships with customers who value its engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The General Manager will deal directly with those customers, become involved in important opportunities, help resolve issues when they arise and identify opportunities to grow relationships and expand the business.
This role is ultimately about taking ownership of the business.
The initial priority will be to learn. Learn the people. Learn the products. Learn the customers. Understand how engineering works with manufacturing. Understand purchasing and production. Understand why customers choose the company and what has made the business successful.
The objective is not to arrive with a playbook and immediately change everything. It is to earn the trust of the organization and its customers, understand the foundation that has already been built and then make it better.
Sales needs to understand what manufacturing can support. Engineering needs visibility into what is coming. Purchasing needs to anticipate material requirements. Production needs what it requires to execute. Customers need realistic commitments and consistent communication.
The General Manager connects all of it.
Over time, the GM will bring additional operating discipline, accountability and visibility to the business while preparing the organization for its next stage of growth. For the right leader and based on the continued evolution of the business, the position may ultimately transition into a CEO role.
The strongest candidate will likely come from an engineered manufacturing organization where they have already carried broad responsibility across multiple functions. Experience within transformers, reactors, magnetics, or power distribution equipment would be particularly attractive. We will also consider leaders from adjacent electrical, electromechanical, or industrial manufacturing environments where products are engineered around specific customer requirements.
We are seeking someone who understands manufacturing and customers. Someone who can think strategically without losing sight of what needs to ship today. Someone who can work effectively with private equity ownership while earning credibility with employees who have spent years working alongside the company’s founders.
Replacing a founder is different from replacing another executive. Institutional knowledge, customer relationships, and employee trust are not transferred through an organizational chart. They are earned.
Initially, success means a seamless leadership transition. Employees understand who is leading the organization. Customers remain confident. Institutional knowledge is transferred. Production continues moving and commitments are met.
Longer term, the goal is growth. The opportunity is to build upon a strong engineering and manufacturing foundation, create an organization capable of supporting a larger business and reduce the company’s dependence on any single individual without losing the responsiveness, technical expertise and customer focus that made the business successful.
Relocation is offered. Compensation is flexible.
This is not simply a manufacturing leadership position. It is not simply a sales leadership position. And it is not simply managing a P&L.
This is an opportunity to run the business.
For the right person, that is exactly the attraction.
