Head of Product Engineering – Large Power Transformers – TX

The electric grid is entering one of the most significant periods of transformation in its history. Growing demand from data centers, electrification, renewable energy, and aging infrastructure has created an unprecedented need for large power transformers. At the same time, the industry faces long lead times, constrained manufacturing capacity, and an increasing need for domestic production.

I’m partnering with an organization that was founded to change that.

Rather than relying on decades old manufacturing methods, the company is building a modern, American manufacturing platform that combines advanced automation, digital engineering, artificial intelligence, and vertically integrated production to dramatically improve how large power transformers are designed and built. Its mission is straightforward but ambitious: strengthen the domestic supply chain, accelerate production, and deliver the critical infrastructure utilities need to modernize and expand the electric grid.

As Head of Product Engineering, you will be one of the architects responsible for making that vision a reality.

This is not a role where you inherit existing products or simply manage an engineering department. You will help establish the technical foundation of an organization from the ground up while defining the engineering philosophy, product architecture, design standards, and manufacturing strategy that will guide the company for years to come. Your work will directly influence every transformer that leaves the factory and every engineering process developed along the way.

You will lead the complete electrical and mechanical design of large power transformers ranging from 50 MVA through 600 MVA with voltage classes from 69 kV through 345 kV. Every aspect of the product will fall under your leadership, including core and winding design, insulation systems, tanks, bushings, cooling systems, on load tap changers, mechanical structures, dielectric performance, thermal management, acoustic performance, and overall product optimization.

Equally important is designing products that can be manufactured efficiently. You will translate engineering requirements into scalable manufacturing processes that leverage automation while maintaining exceptional quality, consistency, and repeatability. Design for Manufacturability will not simply be a consideration. It will become one of the guiding principles behind every engineering decision.

One of the most exciting aspects of this opportunity is the chance to bridge traditional transformer engineering with modern digital technologies. Working closely with executive leadership and software development teams, you will provide the engineering expertise needed to build a proprietary design platform capable of ingesting customer purchase orders and automatically generating manufacturable transformer designs, bills of material, CAD models, and production documentation. Your transformer knowledge will become the intelligence behind a next generation engineering platform designed to redefine how the industry develops products.

You will also help implement advanced engineering tools that support digital modeling, simulation, and validation. Working alongside software and digital infrastructure teams, you will leverage technologies such as finite element analysis, electromagnetic simulation, thermal modeling, digital twins, and advanced CAD environments to improve product performance while reducing engineering cycle times.

Beyond product development, you will build the engineering organization itself. Recruiting exceptional engineering talent, mentoring developing engineers, establishing technical standards, and creating a culture built around innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement will all be central to your success. You will collaborate closely with manufacturing, supply chain, software development, utilities, EPC firms, and strategic suppliers to ensure every design is practical, manufacturable, and aligned with customer requirements.

You will lead compliance with IEEE, ANSI, IEC, DOE, and utility specifications while overseeing design validation, qualification testing, factory acceptance programs, and ongoing product improvement initiatives. Your technical leadership will help establish the organization’s reputation throughout the utility industry.

The ideal candidate brings at least ten years of experience designing and manufacturing large power transformers with a recognized OEM, major utility, engineering organization, or EPC firm. You possess deep expertise in transformer core and winding design, insulation coordination, dielectric testing, thermal management, loss optimization, and overall transformer performance. Experience with transformer design software, finite element analysis, electromagnetic simulation, and advanced CAD platforms is expected, along with a strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability and automated production environments.

Due to the nature of the programs supported, U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required. The role is based in TX, however, there is flexibility for the Head of Product Engineering to start remotely and eventually relocate to TX.

This is a rare opportunity to define the technical DNA of an organization at its earliest stages. If you are motivated by building rather than maintaining, creating rather than inheriting, and leaving a lasting mark on an industry that is essential to the future of our electric grid, this role offers the chance to do exactly that.
